Omschrijving: Een stoornis, doorgaans voor het eerst aan het licht tredend tijdens de vroege kindertijd (en altijd ruim voor de puberteit), gekenmerkt door een niet voorbijgaand en intens onbehagen over de toegewezen sekse, samen met een wens te behoren tot (of vol te houden dat men behoort tot) de andere sekse. Er bestaat een voortdurende preoccupatie met de kleding en activiteiten van de andere sekse en verwerping van de eigen sekse. De diagnose vereist een ernstige verstoring van de normale genderidentiteit; louter jongensachtig gedrag bij meisjes of meisjesachtig gedrag bij jongens is niet genoeg. Genderidentiteitsstoornissen bij personen die de puberteit hebben bereikt of bereiken, mogen niet hier geklasseerd worden, maar onder F66.-.
