In een fase III studie (Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group [ABCSG] 8) bij 2579 postmenopauzale vrouwen met hormoon-receptor positieve vroegtijdige borstkanker die chirurgie ondergingen met of zonder radiotherapie en zonder chemotherapie (zie hieronder), was overschakeling naar anastrozole na 2 jaar adjuvante behandeling met tamoxifen statistisch superieur wat betreft ziektevrije overleving in vergelijking met de patiëntes die tamoxifen bleven innemen, na een gemiddelde opvolging van 24 maanden.
