D'une part, l'on veut déceler les patients dont la gorge présente des streptocoques bêta-hémolytiques du groupe A (GABHS).

En termes d'apparition de résistance vis-à-vis du streptocoque bêta-hémolytique, les céphalosporines sont comparables aux pénicillines à spectre étroit.
Cefalosporines zijn qua resistentievorming t.o.v. de beta-hemolytische streptokok te vergelijken met de smalspectrum-penicillines.

Si le Streptococcus pyogenes (streptocoques ß-hémolytiques du groupe A) reste bien sensible à la pénicilline, par contre la résistance aux macrolides s'est nettement majorée: estimée à 5,8% en 1994, elle atteint 9% en 1997 (4) et des taux de plus de 20% dans certaines régions belges en 1999 (5).
