Il est un autre problème qui a trait aux technologies actuelles en matière de bioéthanol dans l'Union européenne. En effet, au-dessus d'un certain pourcentage d'éthanol en mélange avec de l'essence, on assiste à une augmentation des émissions d'oxyde d'azote (NOx) et d'aldéhydes, produits très polluants et nuisant à la qualité de l'air.
Een probleem bij de huidige bio-ethanol-technologieën in de EU is dat de uitstoot van NOx en aldehyde, die voor een sterke vervuiling van de lucht verantwoordelijk zijn, boven een bepaald bijmengingspercentage van ethanol in benzine toeneemt, zodat een grotere reductie van broeikasgasemissies hier meer schade voor het milieu tot gevolg zou kunnen hebben.

La Commission sait que certaines entreprises de l’industrie du bioéthanol ont exprimé leur réticence à investir dans des installations de traitement dans l’UE parce qu’elles craignent d’éventuelles réductions tarifaires qui conduiraient à des importations massives d’éthanol de sucre de canne à bas prix produit en dehors de l’UE.
De Commissie is zich ervan bewust dat een aantal producenten van bio-ethanol aarzelen in verwerkingsinstallaties in de EU te investeren, omdat ze vrezen dat de tarieven omlaag zullen gaan, wat tot grootschalige invoer van goedkope rietsuikerethanol van producenten buiten de EU zal leiden.
