Des travaux ont également été entamés en 2001 afin d'élaborer un ensemble de lignes directrices sur les propres méthodes de la Commission en matière de sélection et d'utilisation d'expertise dans la formulation des politiques en vue d'une proposition ultérieure sur une approche commune aux institutions européennes et aux États membres; de définir un modèle pour les systèmes de référence scientifiques communs européens (ECSRS, European Common Scientific Reference Systems); et d'instaurer un échange d'expérience entre les organismes de recherche et de régulation concernés par la problématique des risques.
In 2001 werd ook een begin gemaakt met de ontwikkeling van een reeks richtsnoeren voor de eigen werkwijzen van de Commissie bij het selecteren en gebruiken van deskundigheid voor beleidsontwikkeling met het oog op een later voorstel voor een gemeenschappelijke benadering voor andere instellingen en de lidstaten, met de ontwikkeling van een blauwdruk voor Europese wetenschappelijke referentiesystemen (ECSRS) en met de uitwisseling van ervaringen tussen onderzoeksinstanties en regulerende instanties op het gebied van risico's.

Les derniers thèmes traités lors de ces réunions ont été : « How to achieve excellence in the European Research Area » (Paris, juin 2003); « Internationalisation of national R&D systems : policies, priority setting, institutional challenges » (Helsinki, juin 2002); Attractiveness of scientific Carreers » (Athènes, juin 2001); « R&D funding strategies and priority setting » (Stockholm, juin 2000); « Evaluation of Public expenditure in R&D : methodologies, impacts, consequences » (Dublin, juin 1999).
De laatste onderwerpen die daarbij aan bod kwamen waren : « How to achieve excellence in the European Research Area » (Parijs, juni 2003); « Internationalisation of national R&D systems : policies, priority setting, institutional challenges » (Helsinki, juni 2002); « Attractiveness of scientific Carreers » (Athene, juni 2001); « R&D funding strategies and priority setting » (Stockholm, juni 2000); « Evaluation of public expenditure in R&D : methodologies, impacts, consequences (Dublin, juni 1999).

Un arrêté royal du 12 mars 2000 approuve la modification apportée aux statuts de l'association internationale « Scientific Association of European Talc Industry », en abrégé : « Eurotalc », dont le siège est désormais fixé à 1070 Bruxelles.

Il est également le représentant officiel en Belgique des fournisseurs internationaux d'information scientifique et technique, tels que DIMDI (Deutsches Institut für Medizinische Dokumentation und Information), STN International (Scientific and Technical Information Network), CAS Online (Chemical Abstracts Service), etc. Fin 1997, les activités de l'ESA-IRS (Information Retrieval Service), service online d'information électronique créé par l'Agence spatiale européenne, sont reprises par le consortium européen EINS (European Information Network Services) dont le SIST devient le Centre national pour la Belgique et le Grand-Duché du Luxembourg.
