Aan dit vooruitzicht op toetreding werd sindsdien meermaals herinnerd, met name op de Top van Zagreb in november 2000 (deze top was de start van het stabilisatie- en associatieproces met de vijf landen van Zuidoost-Europa), op de Europese Top van Thessaloniki in juni 2003 of ook nog op de EU-Western Balkans High Level Meeting van juni 2010. De voorbije jaren kwam dit vooruitzicht ook ter sprake in de conclusies van de Raad algemene Zaken van december.

The expected results are (i) definition and implementation of an information and communication strategy on the legal conditions for migration and the prevention of irregular migration, (ii) putting in place a mechanism for welcoming, orientating and accompanying potential migrants (iii) putting in place a service for welcoming, orientating and accompanying returnees (iv) productively using the human, financial and technical capital lof the diaspora (v) knowledge and analysis of the migratory flows of relevance to Mali (vi) coordination of the various hierarchical structures so that they can properly steer the above-mentioned components.

Midden maart 2005 moest er immers nog door de Aziatische ontwikkelingsbank een vergadering ter zake plaatsvinden in Manilla (High Level Coordination Meeting on Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Assistance to Tsunami-Affected Countries).

C'est finalement l'option 3 qui a été retenue (voir introduction), car c'était la seule à donner une possibilité de consensus.
