La substantielle contribution européenne devait servir à la mise au point et à l'utilisation du laboratoire orbital COLUMBUS, du véhicule de transfert automatique de fret et de carburant (ATV) ainsi qu'aux recherches préparatoires à la mise au point d'un véhicule destiné au transport d'équipages (CTV).
De substantiële Europese bijdrage moest dienen voor de ontwikkeling en het gebruik van het ruimtelaboratorium COLUMBUS, het voertuig voor automatisch vervoer van vracht en brandstof (ATV) net als voor het voorbereidende onderzoek in het kader van de ontwikkeling van een voertuig om de bemanning te vervoeren (CTV).
