men en de ernst van acute stressreacties. De symptomen vertonen een karakteristiek gemengd- en wisselend beeld en omvatten een beginstadium van 'verdoving' met enige bewustzijnsvernauwing en verenging van aandacht, onvermogen prikkels te begrijpen

Deze toestand kan gevolgd worden door hetzij verdere terugtrekking uit de situatie (tot dissociatieve stupor toe - F44.2) of door agitatie en hyperactiviteit (vluchtreactie of fugue). Autonome tekenen van panische angst (tachycardie, zweten, blozen) zijn gewoonlijk aanwezig. De symptomen verschijnen doorgaans binnen minuten na de inwerking van de stressveroorzakende prikkel of gebeurtenis en verdwijnen in twee tot drie dagen (dikwijls in uren). Er kan gedeeltelijke of volledige amnesie (F44.0) voor de episode zijn.
