Onderzoeksterreinen die in dit verband interessant kunnen zijn, zijn bijvoorbeeld onderzoek naar de pathofysiologie van de ziekte, onder andere in de vorm van epidemiologisch onderzoek en klinische proeven, gezondheidseconomisch, sociaalwetenschappelijk en geesteswetenschappelijk onderzoek om het begrip van de psychologische en sociale aspecten van de ziekte te bevorderen, en onderzoek naar modellen voor maatschappelijke zorg, onder andere in de vorm van uitwisseling van beste praktijken voor het opleiden van personen die zorg verlenen aan dementiepatiënten, om recht te doen aan de brede consensus dat de patiëntenzorg zich niet mag beperken tot farmacologische behandeling maar ook niet-farmacologische benaderingen moet omvatten.
Examples of areas of potential interest are research into the pathophysiology of the disease, including epidemiological and clinical trials, research in health economics, the social sciences and humanities to help understanding of the psychological and social aspects of the disease, and research into social care models including sharing of best practices in the training of dementia caregivers, reflecting the broad consensus that patient care should not be limited to pharmacological treatment but should also include non-pharmacological approaches.
