The studies measured the use of digital tools and services in health: use of and access to electronic health records, tele-health, exchange of information between professionals etc. These services, if fully implemented, give patients more information, and more involvement in their healthcare, improved access to health advice and treatment and can make national healthcare systems more efficient.

Onder de activiteiten van die netwerken vallen de volgende onderwerpen: - epidemiologisch onderzoek: onderzoek betreffende de minst gekende kankers; effecten van blootstelling aan bepaalde kankerverwekkende stoffen; studie van met de voeding verbonden factoren; epidemiologisch onderzoek gebaseerd op de vergelijking van gegevens uit verschillende regio's (waardoor de effecten van verschillen op het gebied van milieu, cultuur, erfelijkheid kunnen worden bestudeerd, enz.); - onderzoek ter bevordering van een vroegtijdige diagnose: multidisciplinair onderzoek met betrekking tot veranderingen in het genoom van kankercellen; tumorcellen- en tumorweefselbank; verbetering van de technieken met het oog op een vroegtijdige diagnose; uitwisseling van informatie tussen de nationale bewakingsprogramma's, enz.; - onderzoek ter verbetering van de kankerbehandeling: verbetering van de radiotherapietechnieken; evaluatie van de chemotherapie- en immunologische behandelingen, enz.; - onderzoek naar de kwaliteit van de klinische zorg en evaluatie van de gezondheidsdiensten Net als bij de andere activiteiten van de Europese Unie op het gebied van het medisch onderzoek, hebben de rond de genoemde thema's ondernomen initiatieven tot doel de werkzaamheden en de nationale programma's beter te coördineren en zijn ze gebaseerd op de het beginsel van de optimale benutting van de Europese dimensie van problemen en onderzoek: uitwisseling van informatie en gegevens; vergelijking van de resultaten; harmonisatie van de analayse- en behandelingsprotocollen; opbouw van de centrale diensten en van de gegevens- en tumorcellen- en tumorweefselsbanken, enz. Alle grote nationale laboratoria die op het gebied van het kankeronderzoek in Europa actief zijn, zijn bij het programma betrokken.
These networks' activities cover the following areas: - epidemiological research: studies of less common cancers; effects of exposure to carcinogenic substances; studies of nutrition-related factors; epidemiological studies based on comparing data from different regions (highlighting the effects of environmental, cultural and genetic differences, etc.); - research to improve early diagnosis: multidisciplinary research into genome changes in cancer cells; tumour cell and tissue banks; improvements in early diagnosis methods; exchanges of information between national screening programmes, etc.; - research to improve cancer treatment: improvements in radiotherapy techniques; evaluation of chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, etc.; - research into the quality of clinical care and evaluation of health care services. Like the European Union's other activities in the field of medical research, the activities carried out in these areas are designed to improve the coordination of national programmes and activities and are based upon exploiting the European dimension of the problems and research in question: exchanges of information and data; intercomparison of results; harmonization of analysis and treatment protocols; development of central services and data, tissue and cell banks, etc.
