8. BEKLEMTOONT dat lawaai, luchtverontreiniging en emissies van broeikasgassen milieuproblemen van de Europese steden zijn die vooral schadelijke gevolgen hebben voor de meest kwetsbare groepen in onze samenleving, met name onze kinderen; ONDERSTREEPT dat er, bij de uitvoering van de thematische strategie voor het stadsmilieu en het WHO-Actieplan voor Europa "kind, milieu en gezondheid" (CEHAPE), gestreefd moet worden naar synergie en dat daarbij de nadruk moet worden gelegd op de voornaamste doestellingen in verband met de gezondheid van kinderen en het milieu, alsmede op het EU-Actieplan voor milieu en gezondheid; BEVEELT AAN dat bij de uitvoering van de thematische strategie op het niveau van de EU en de lidstaten rekening wordt gehouden met het CEHAPE en de daarin vervatte regionale prioritaire doelstellingen teneinde de milieu- en gezondheidsomstandigheden van kinderen in de steden te verbeteren en de integratie van de behoeften van kinderen in stedelijk beleid (met name bij de planning van woonkernen, huisvesting en vervoer) te bevorderen.

EMPHASISES that noise, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are environmental problems in Europe’s cities which especially affect the most vulnerable groups of our society in particular our children; UNDERLINES that synergies should be aimed at highlighting the main commitments on children's health and the environment as well as the EU Environment and Health Action Plan, while implementing the Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment and the WHO-Children Environmental Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE); RECOMMENDS that the implementation of the Thematic Strategy at EU and Member State level should take into account the CEHAPE and its Regional Priority Goals in order to improve the environmental and health situation of children in cities and promote the integration of children's needs in urban policies (in particular in planning settlements, housing and transport);

13. encourage and support research into the causative factors underlying childhood asthma (including environmental stressors, and the genetics and host condition of the individual), and into the reasons for the regional variations in the incidence of childhood asthma; continue to develop a common terminology and definitions for use in the analysis of childhood asthma; collect and disseminate good quality data on childhood asthma; encourage the exchange of best practices in relation to the prevention and management of childhood asthma support; involve all relevant stakeholder groups which can contribute to the struggle against childhood asthma; and ensure that the implementation of the Children's Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE) to be adopted at the June 2004 pan-European Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health takes full account of the major public health challenge posed by childhood asthma.
