Individuele kwetsbaarheid en weerstand spelen een rol bij het voorkomen en de ernst van acute stressreacties. De symptomen vertonen een karakteristiek gemengd- en wisselend beeld en omvatten een beginstadium van 'verdoving' met enige bewustzijnsvernauwing en verenging van aandacht, onvermogen prikkels te begrijpen en desoriëntatie. De symptomen verschijnen doorgaans binnen minuten na de inwerking van de stressveroorzakende prikkel of gebeurtenis en verdwijnen in twee tot drie dagen (dikwijls in uren).
