– (EL) Mevrouw de Voorzitter, mijnheer de minister, mijnheer de commissaris, uw verklaringen van vandaag hebben bij ons de indruk gewekt dat u wel heel gemakkelijk over het feit heen stapt dat toen het Constitutionele Hof van Turkije het besluit nam om de Koerdisch gezinde partij buiten de wet te zetten, slechts enkele uren later de Raad Algemene Zaken en de Europese Raad besloten om in essentie het licht op groen te zetten voor een onbelemmerde voortzetting van het toetredingsproces met Turkije. Dit land schendt echter de mensenrechten en de democratische rechten, het eerbiedigt het internationaal recht niet, het erkent de Cyprische Republiek niet.
– (EL) Mr President, Mr López Garrido, Commissioner, your statements this evening have given me the impression that you are happy to gloss over the fact that the most recent decision by the Turkish Constitutional Court to put the pro-Kurdish party outside the law was taken a few hours before the decisions by the General Affairs Council and the decision by the summit, which essentially give the green light for Turkey to head straight for Europe, at a time when it is a country which violates human and democratic rights, fails to comply with international law and refuses to recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

Urges the Turkish government to launch, as a matter of priority, a political initiative favouring a lasting settlement of the Kurdish issue, which can only be based on tangible improvements in the cultural, economic and social opportunities available to citizens of Kurdish origin, including real possibilities to learn Kurdish within the public and private schooling system and to use it in broadcasting, in daily life and in access to public services; regards a possible banning of the Democratic Society Party (DTP) as counterproductive to a political solution;
