Op basis van die evaluatie of zodra nieuwe informatie over betrouwbare veiligere alternatieven voor sfygmomanometers en andere kwikhoudende meettoestellen beschikbaar is, moet de Commissie zo nodig een wetgevingsvoorstel indienen om de reeds in die vermelding opgenomen beperkingen uit te breiden tot sfygmomanometers en andere meettoestellen in de gezondheidszorg en voor ander professioneel of industrieel gebruik, zodat kwik in meettoestellen geleidelijk geëlimineerd wordt overal waar dit technisch en economisch uitvoerbaar is.
On the basis of that review, or as soon as new information on reliable safer alternatives for sphygmomanometers and other measuring devices containing mercury becomes available, the Commission is requested, if appropriate, to present a legislative proposal to extend the restrictions already provided in that entry to sphygmomanometers and other measuring devices in healthcare and in other professional and industrial uses, so that mercury in measuring devices is phased out whenever technically and economically feasible.

Vermelding 18 bis van bijlage XVII bij Verordening (EG) nr. 1907/2006 voorziet in een verbod op het in de handel brengen van kwikhoudende koortsthermometers en van andere kwikhoudende meettoestellen voor het grote publiek en verzoekt de Commissie de beschikbaarheid te onderzoeken van betrouwbare veiligere en technisch en economisch haalbare alternatieven voor kwikhoudende sfygmomanometers en andere meettoestellen in de gezondheidszorg en voor ander professioneel of industrieel gebruik.
Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, in entry 18a of Annex XVII, provides for a ban on the placing on the market of fever thermometers containing mercury, as well as other mercury containing measuring devices intended for sale to the general public, and requests the Commission to carry out a review of the availability of reliable safer alternatives that are technically and economically feasible for mercury containing sphygmomanometers and other measuring devices in healthcare and in other professional and industrial uses.

Richtlijn 2007/51/EG van het Europees Parlement en de Raad tot wijziging van Richtlijn 76/769/EEG van de Raad wat betreft de beperking van het op de markt brengen van bepaalde kwikhoudende meettoestellen is op 25 september 2007 goedgekeurd.

(4) Bij de invoer van kwikhoudende meettoestellen van meer dan 50 jaar oud gaat het om antiquiteiten of cultuurgoederen in de zin van Verordening (EEG) nr. 3911/92 van de Raad van 9 december 1992 betreffende de uitvoer van cultuurgoederen .
