(39) Bovenop de huidige verordening worden momenteel met betrekking tot de Middellandse Zee de nodige maatregelen genomen met het oog op de toetreding van de Europese Unie tot het Protocol inzake de bescherming van de Middellandse Zee tegen verontreiniging die het gevolg is van de exploratie en de exploitatie van het continentaal plat, de zeebodem en de ondergrond daarvan ("het Offshore-protocol") bij het Verdrag inzake de bescherming van het mariene milieu en de kustgebieden van de Middellandse Zee ("het Verdrag van Barcelona"), goedgekeurd bij Besluit 77/585/EEG van de Raad.
(39) In relation to the Mediterranean Sea, in conjunction to the current Regulation, the necessary actions are being undertaken for the accession of the European Union to the Protocol for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution Resulting from Exploration and Exploitation of the Continental Shelf and the Seabed and its Subsoil ('the Offshore Protocol') to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean ('the Barcelona Convention'), which was approved by Council Decision 77/585/EEC.

(39) In relation to the Mediterranean Sea, and in addition to the obligations contained in this Directive, the necessary action has or is being undertaken to secure the accession of the European Union to the Protocol for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution Resulting from Exploration and Exploitation of the Continental Shelf and the Seabed and its Subsoil ('the Offshore Protocol') to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean ('the Barcelona Convention'), which was approved by Council Decision 77/585/EEC.

20. verzoekt alle partijen die dat nog niet hebben gedaan naast het Kyoto-protocol en het Cartagena-protocol de Internationale Verbintenis inzake plantgenetische hulpbronnen voor voedsel en landbouw van de FAO, het Verdrag van Stockholm inzake persistente organische stoffen, het Verdrag van Rotterdam inzake voorafgaande geïnformeerde instemming ten aanzien van gevaarlijke chemicaliën en pesticiden in de internationale handel, de VN-Overeenkomst inzake visbestanden, inclusief verschillende actieplannen van de FAO, en het Verdrag van Bazel en het offshore-protocol inzake de grensoverschrijdende overbrenging van gevaarlijke stoffen te ratificeren;

In addition to ratification of the Kyoto Protocol and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, calls on all parties which have not yet done so to ratify the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for food and agriculture, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, the UN Fish Stocks Agreement including various FAO Plans of Action, and the Basel Convention and the Offshore Protocol on Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes;

Samen met dit wetsvoorstel dient de Commissie een voorstel in om de EU toe te laten treden tot een protocol bij het Verdrag van Barcelona dat voorziet in de bescherming van het Middellandse Zeegebied tegen vervuiling door offshore-exploratie en exploitatiewerkzaamheden (zie IP/11/1261).
In conjunction to this legislative proposal, the Commission is putting forward a proposal for the EU to accede to a Protocol of the Barcelona Convention that protects the Mediterranean against pollution from offshore exploration and exploitation activities (see IP/11/1261).
