IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

Artikel 167 van het Verdrag betreffende de werking van de Europese Unie (VWEU) schrijft voor dat de Unie bij haar optreden de culturele diversiteit in aanmerking neemt en bijdraagt tot de ontplooiing van de culturen van de lidstaten, onder eerbiediging van de nationale en regionale verscheidenheid van die culturen, maar tegelijk ook de nadruk leggend op het gemeenschappelijk cultureel erfgoed.
Article 167 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) requires the Union to take cultural diversity into account in its action and to contribute to the flowering of the cultures of the Member States, while respecting their national and regional diversity and at the same time bringing the common cultural heritage to the fore.

Het Verdrag betreffende de werking van de Europese Unie (VWEU) is gericht op totstandbrenging van een steeds hechter verbond tussen de Europese volkeren en verleent de Unie onder andere de taak om bij te dragen tot de ontplooiing van de culturen van de lidstaten onder eerbiediging van de nationale en regionale verscheidenheid van die culturen, en tegelijkertijd om er zorg voor te dragen dat de omstandigheden nodig voor het concurrentievermogen van de industrie van de Unie aanwezig zijn.

Pursuant to EC Treaty (art. 151), EU competence in the culture area consists in contributing to the flowering of the cultures of the Member States, while respecting their national and regional diversity and at the same time bringing the common cultural heritage to the fore.

(6) The Treaty confers responsibility on the European Union for creating and ever-closer union among the peoples of Europe and for contributing to the flowering of the cultures of the Member States, while respecting their national and regional diversity and at the same time bringing the common cultural heritage to the fore; special attention should be devoted to safeguarding the position of Europe's small cultures and less widely-spoken languages.

On the question of libraries and the promotion of democracy and culture, the Council would remind you that, in Article 151 of the EC Treaty, it is specified that the Community’s efforts to contribute to the development of culture in the Member States, at the same time as respecting the latter’s national and regional diversity, should be aimed at promoting cooperation between the Member States. If need be, the Community’s efforts should also support and augment the Member States’ activities in a number of areas: firstly, improving people’s knowledge of, and disseminating information about, the European peoples’ culture and history; secondly, preserving and protecting such cultural heritage as is of significance to Europe as a whole; thirdly, promoting cultural exchange of a non-commercial nature; and fourthly, supporting artistic and literary creation, including within the audiovisual sector.
