In tegenstelling tot de ondersoort Phalacrocorax carbo carbo ("Atlantische aalscholver"), die nooit met uitsterven werd bedreigd, stond de ondersoort Ph. carbo sinensis ("continentale aalscholver") oorspronkelijk op de lijst van bedreigde vogelsoorten in bijlage I van de Vogelrichtlijn, waarvoor speciale beschermingsmaatregelen gelden.
