De doelstellingen en beginselen van de EU-strategie voor duurzame ontwikkeling kunnen nog sterker in het cohesiebeleid worden geïntegreerd, zodanig dat die strategie de nieuwe uitdagingen inzake duurzame ontwikkeling waarmee de EU wordt geconfronteerd, bijvoorbeeld inzake demografische verschuivingen en klimaatverandering, kan aanpakken. Het cohesiebeleid kan bijdragen tot het opvangen van de gevolgen, in het bijzonder door de overgang naar de koolstofarme economie te ondersteunen, en tot aanpassingsmaatregelen.
There is scope for further integration of the goals and principles of the EU SDS into cohesion policy to enable it to address the new sustainable development challenges faced by the EU, e.g. challenges of demographic change and climate change. Cohesion policy can help both to mitigate, particularly through supporting the shift to a low-carbon economy, and to adapt.
