They have therefore had an opportunity to learn the lessons from URBAN I and apply them in URBAN II. A similar opportunity exists where there is no overlap, but where the same city has had both URBAN I and II. Urban II is jointly financed by the Commission and the Member States. For 2000-06, the Community's contribution to the initiative amounts to EUR 730 million, exclusively from the ERDF, for a total investment of EUR 1.6 billion, covering a population of some 2.2 million.

De uitwisseling van ervaring en van goede werkmethoden inzake stedelijke ontwikkeling en economische en sociale rehabilitatie van stedelijke gebieden is een essentiëel onderdeel van het communautaire initiatief URBAN II. De invoering van methodische kwantificering en relevante indicatoren waarbij men zich kan laten leiden door de audit van URBAN (EN) zal deze uitwisseling van informatie vergemakkelijken.
Exchanging experience and good practice with regard to urban development and the economic and social regeneration of urban areas is a key component of the Urban II Community Initiative. This exchange of information will be facilitated by developing methods for quantification and appropriate performance indicators, which could be inspired by the Urban Audit.

6. is verheugd over de vermindering van het aantal programma's voor het nieuwe URBAN-initiatief teneinde in een gezamenlijke poging een ethische massa te bereiken, maar meent dat de willekeurige hoogste grens van 50 projecten moet worden opgetrokken om rekening te houden met regionale en plaatselijke factoren met vasthouding van de financiële toewijzingen aan de lidstaten; acht vanwege deze concentratie op een klein aantal projecten publicatie en verspreiding van de resultaten van het nieuwe communautaire initiatief URBAN van bijzonder belang om een multiplicatoreffect teweeg te brengen;
6. Welcomes the reduction in the number of programmes for the new URBAN initiative to achieve critical mass in a concentrated effort, but is of the opinion that the arbitrary maximum threshold of 50 projects needs to be increased to reflect regional and local factors whilst maintaining financial allocations to the Member States; considers that in view of the concentration on a limited number of projects, the publication and dissemination of the results of the new Community URBAN initiative will be particularly important to achieve a multiplier effect;

4. gezien de beperkte toewijzing voor URBAN vergeleken met de andere communautaire initiatieven Leader, Equal en Interreg, verzoekt de Commissie er bij de lidstaten op aan te dringen ruimere middelen aan URBAN toe te kennen en de mogelijkheden tot private financiering optimaal te benutten; is van mening dat de beschikbare financiële middelen geconcentreerd en doelmatig besteed dienen te worden;
4. Given the reduced allocation to URBAN compared with the other Community initiatives LEADER, EQUAL and INTERREG, asks the Commission to urge the Member States to grant more adequate resources to URBAN and make optimum use of the opportunities for private financing; considers that the financial resources need to be allocated in a concentrated and efficient way;
