Omschrijving: Er komen aanzienlijke culturele verschillen voor bij de presentatie van deze stoornis en er komen twee hoofdvormen voor, met aanzienlijke overlap. Bij de ene vorm is het belangrijkste kenmerk een klacht over toegenomen vermoeidheid na geestelijke inspanning, dikwijls samengaand met enige afname in het efficiënt verrichten van de dagelijkse beroepsarbeid. De geestelijke vermoeibaarheid wordt op typerende wijze beschreven als een zich op onaangename wijze opdringen van verwarrende associaties of herinneringen, moeite met concentreren en algemeen inefficiënt denken. Bij de andere vorm ligt de nadruk op gevoelens van lichamelijke of fysieke zwakte en uitputting na slechts minimale inspanning, samengaand met een gevoel van spierkrampen en pijnen en onvermogen om te ontspannen. Bij beide vormen is een scala van andere onaangename-gevoelens van lichamelijke aard gebruikelijk, zoals duizeligheid, spanningshoofdpijnen en gevoelens van algemene onzekerheid. Bezorgdheid over afnemende geestelijke- en lichamelijke gezondheid, prikkelbaarheid, anhedonie en in geringe mate wisselende-depressiviteit en -angst komen alle veel voor. Definition: Considerable cultural variations occur in the presentation of this disorder, and two main types occur, with substantial overlap. In one type, the main feature is a complaint of increased fatigue after mental effort, often associated with some decrease in occupational performance or coping efficiency in daily tasks. The mental fatiguability is typically described as an unpleasant intrusion of distracting associations or recollections, difficulty in concentrating, and generally inefficient thinking. In the other type, the emphasis is on feelings of bodily or physical weakness and exhaustion after only minimal effort, accompanied by a feeling of muscular aches and pains and inability to relax. In both types a variety of other unpleasant physical feelings is common, such as dizziness, tension headaches, and feelings of general instability. Worry about decreasing mental and bodily well-being, irritability, anhedonia, and varying minor degrees of both depression and anxiety are all common.
