The Community is a Contracting Party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 (Unclos), has ratified the United Nations Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks of 4 August 1995 (UN Fish Stocks Agreement) and has accepted the Agreement to Promote Compliance with International Conservation and Management Measures by Fishing Vessels on the High Seas of 24 November 1993 of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO Compliance Agreement).

7. is van mening dat de voorgestelde actie in de eerste plaats gericht zou moeten zijn op de doeleinden van het multilaterale handelssysteem zelf en dat daarbij gelet moet worden op de wederzijdse ondersteuning van en samenhang met de acties van de andere internationale organisaties; is van mening dat met name een versterking van de coördinatie tussen de activiteiten van de WTO en die van de IAO, de Voedsel- en Landbouworganisatie van de Verenigde Naties (FAO), het milieuprogramma van de Verenigde Naties (UNEP), het Ontwikkelingsprogramma van de Verenigde Naties (UNDP), de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO), de Conferentie van de Verenigde Naties inzake handel en ontwikkeling (UNCTAD) en het Kyoto-programma voor hernieuwbare energie noodzakelijk is teneinde een grotere samenhang in het besluitvormingsproces van deze organisaties te kunnen waarborgen; is van mening dat in dit kader de status van waarnemer bij de WTO moet worden toegekend aan de IAO en stelt voor dat er een Commissie voor handel en fatsoenlijke werkgelegenheid worden opgericht bij de WTO naar het model van de Commissie voor handel en milieu;

Takes the view that the proposed exercise should focus first and foremost on the very aims of the multilateral trade system, to ensure that they are mutually supportive and consistent with the action being taken by other international organisations; considers in particular that the coordination of WTO activities with those of the International Labour Organization ( ILO), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Kyoto programme on renewable energy, should be strengthened, in order to ensure greater consistency in the decision-making processes of those organisations; in this connection, believes that the ILO should be granted observer status before the WTO and that a committee on trade and decent employment should be set up modelled on the Committee on Trade and Environment;

In de Gedragscode voor een verantwoorde visserij van de Voedsel- en Landbouworganisatie van de Verenigde Naties en in de Overeenkomst van de Verenigde Naties inzake de instandhouding en het beheer van grensoverschrijdende en over grote afstanden trekkende visbestanden wordt gewezen op de noodzaak het onderzoek en de verzameling van gegevens te ontwikkelen om de wetenschappelijke kennis over de sector te vergroten.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the Agreement relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks both emphasise the need to develop research and data collection with a view to improving scientific knowledge of the sector.
