In verband met de opheffing van de interne grenzen in de Gemeenschap op 1 januari 1993 werden in Richtlijn 91/477/EEG inzake de controle op de verwerving en het voorhanden hebben van wapens gemeenschappelijke bepalingen vastgesteld om in de lidstaten controles mogelijk te maken betreffende het verwerven en het in bezit hebben van vuurwapens en de overbrenging daarvan naar een andere lidstaat.
