In tegenstelling tot de geostationaire communicatiesatellieten hebben deze satellieten een inclinatie van 3 tot 10 graden, een apogeum van 39.000 tot 42.000 km en een perigeum van 30.000 tot 33.000 km. De satellieten staan dus niet onbeweeglijk op hun omloopbaan maar volgen een complexe elliptische baan.
