Vandaag heeft de Europese Unie op het VN-hoofdkwartier in New York de aanzet gegeven tot de inwerkingtreding van het wereldwijde verdrag tot vermindering van de blootstelling aan kwik.
Today at the UN headquarters in New York, the European Union has triggered the entry into force of the global treaty aimed at reducing exposure to mercury.

In haar mededeling aan de Raad en het Europees Parlement betreffende een strategie van de Gemeenschap voor kwik heeft de Commissie aangegeven dat het noodzakelijk is om de kwikconcentraties in het milieu en de blootstelling van de mens te verlagen en heeft als doelstelling onder meer de beperking van de hoeveelheid kwik die in de samenleving in gebruik wordt genomen door vraag en aanbod terug te dringen, de verlaging van de emissie van kwik, en bescherming tegen de blootstelling aan kwik voorgesteld.
In its Communication to the Council and the European Parliament on a Community Strategy Concerning Mercury the Commission outlined that it is necessary to reduce mercury levels in the environment and human exposure and proposed as objectives, among others, the reduction of entry into circulation of mercury in society, by cutting supply and demand, the reduction of mercury emissions and the protection against mercury emissions.
