-De Commissie zal de wereldwijde inspanningen voor de bescherming van de mariene biodiversiteit in alle desbetreffende internationale instellingen ondersteunen, zoals de prioritaire maatregelen over de biodiversiteit van mariene en kustgebieden die zijn vastgesteld tijdens de 12de vergadering van de Conferentie van de Partijen bij het Verdrag inzake biologische diversiteit en andere besluiten met betrekking tot de identificatie van ecologisch of biologisch gezien belangrijke mariene zones (Ecologically and Biologically Significant Marine Areas, EBSA's).
-The Commission will support global efforts for the protection of marine biodiversity in all relevant international institutions such as the priority actions adopted by the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD on marine and coastal biodiversity and other decisions related to the identification of the Ecologically and Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs).

Er zijn drempels bepaald met betrekking tot de negen „planetaire grenzen”. Zodra deze worden overschreden, kunnen ze leiden tot onherstelbare wijzigingen met mogelijk desastreuze gevolgen voor mensen. Hierbij gaat het onder meer om: klimaatverandering, verlies van biodiversiteit, verbruik van het mondiale zoetwater, verzuring van de oceanen, aantasting van de stikstof- en de fosforkringloop en veranderingen in het landgebruik („Ecology and Society”, vol. 14, nr. 2, 2009).
Thresholds associated with nine ‘planetary boundaries’ have been identified which, once crossed, could lead to irreversible changes with potentially disastrous consequences for humans, including: climate change, biodiversity loss, global freshwater use, ocean acidification, the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles and land-use change (Ecology and Society, Vol. 14, No 2, 2009).
