Welcomes the Commission’s work on antimicrobial resistance and on the prevention and control of HAIs, as well as the coordination and surveillance efforts of the ECDC, in particular in the framework of the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net), the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption Network (ESAC-Net) and the Healthcare-Associated Infections surveillance Network (HAI-Net);

Stresses that sound information on the use of antimicrobials in some Member States is still lacking; emphasises the importance of establishing an effective European network of national surveillance systems in the human health and veterinary sectors, based on uniform standards for all Member States, in order to compile clear, comparable, transparent and timely reference data on antimicrobial drug usage; believes this should be based on the existing monitoring networks operated by EFSA, the ECDC European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption Network (ESAC-net), the ECDC European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-net), the ECDC Food- and Waterborne Disease Network (FWD-Net), and the EMA European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption (ESVAC);

EU surveillance systems have been developed to monitor AMR (European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network) and the consumption of antimicrobials (European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption, ESAC).

HERINNERT ERAAN dat op antimicrobiële resistentie en zorginfecties overeenkomstig artikel 2, lid 1, onder a), ii), en lid 2, van Besluit nr. 1082/2013/EU van het Europees Parlement en de Raad van 22 oktober 2013 over ernstige grensoverschrijdende bedreigingen van de gezondheid en tot intrekking van Besluit nr. 2119/98/EG (6) epidemiologische surveillance van toepassing is;
RECALLS that antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections are subject to epidemiological surveillance in accordance with Article 2.1(a)(ii) and Article 2.2 of Decision No 1082/2013/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 October 2013 on serious cross-border threats to health and repealing Decision No 2119/98/EC (6);

Examples of policy measures taken since 2001 include the funding of genome research to fight antibiotic resistance; the establishment of a joint EU surveillance and early warning networks for communicable diseases; the adoption of a proposal for a new EU regulatory framework for chemicals (REACH); the adoption of the European Environment and Health Action Plan 2004-2010; and the setting up of a European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and European Centre on Communicable Diseases (ECDC).
