Recognises the threat to ecosystems from certain pesticides, flame retardants and other persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic chemicals; stresses the importance in this regard of effective implementation of REACH; stresses the need to monitor bio-accumulation of such pollutants through the use of top predators in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments; considers furthermore that special attention should be given to the hazards of pesticide use as they are designed to be toxic and are used in the environment; points out that European pesticide legislation - proposal for a regulation on the placing of plant protection products on the market (COM(2006)0388 ); proposal for a framework directive on the sustainable use of pesticides (COM(2006)0372 ); Thematic strategy on the sustainable use of pesticides (COM(2006)0373 ) - should ensure that the European biodiversity loss does not grow due to pesticide use;

2. herinnert aan de verzoeken die zijn gedaan in zijn eerder genoemde resolutie van 30 mei 2002 in verband met de herziening van de wetgeving inzake pesticiden met het oog op een vermindering van de risico's die aan het gebruik van pesticiden zijn verbonden en onderstreept verder de noodzaak met spoed bindende aanvullende maatregelen te nemen met het oog op een vermindering van het gebruik van pesticiden en dringt er derhalve bij de Commissie op aan de procedure voor de uitwerking van bindende en doeltreffende maatregelen te bespoedigen, en duidelijke doelstellingen en tijdschema's voor elke lidstaat vast te stellen, daarbij rekening houdend met de vermindering die in sommige lidstaten al heeft plaatsgevonden dank zij de uitvoering van nationale beleidsmaatregelen;
2. Reaffirms the calls made in its abovementioned resolution of 30 May 2002 for the revision of pesticides legislation with a view to pesticide risk reduction; furthermore, stresses the need for urgent and mandatory complementary action on pesticide use reduction and therefore calls on the Commission to speed up the process of developing binding and effective measures, and to define clear goals and timetables for each Member State, taking into account reductions already achieved in some Member States since the implementation of their national reduction plans;

2. herinnert aan de verzoeken die zijn gedaan in zijn resolutie van 30 mei 2002 in verband met de herziening van de wetgeving inzake pesticiden met het oog op een vermindering van de risico's die aan het gebruik van pesticiden zijn verbonden en onderstreept verder de noodzaak met spoed bindende aanvullende maatregelen te nemen met het oog op een vermindering van het gebruik van pesticiden en dringt er derhalve bij de Commissie op aan de procedure voor de uitwerking van bindende en doeltreffende maatregelen te bespoedigen, en duidelijke doelstellingen en tijdschema's voor elke lidstaat vast te stellen, aan de hand van een globale en indicatieve kwantitatieve doelstelling om het gebruik met 50% terug te dringen binnen een periode van tien jaar, gemeten door middel van indicatoren als de toepassingsfrequentie;
