TRADUCTIONS EN CONTEXTE

14. verwelkomt de verontschuldigingen die de minister van Justitie, Mehmet Ali Sahin, namens de regering heeft aangeboden aan de familie van Engin Ceber, die als gevolg van mishandelingen in de gevangenis is overleden; sluit zich aan bij de Commissie mensenrechten van het Turkse parlement, die zich zorgen maakt over het feit dat justitie nalaat strafvervolging in te stellen in gevallen van foltering en mishandeling, die zich in toenemende mate voordoen; roept de Turkse regering op om zich ook verder systematisch te beijveren voor het beëindigen van foltering en mishandeling binnen en buiten officiële detentie-inrichtingen en een einde te maken aan de cultuur van straffeloosheid; onderstreept in dit verband dat de ratificatie en tenuitvoerlegging van het facultatief protocol bij het VN-Verdrag tegen foltering de geloofwaardigheid van dit streven aanzienlijk zou vergroten; is tevens verontrust over excessief politiegeweld bij het optreden tegen publieke demonstraties;

Welcomes the apologies offered by the Minister of Justice, Mehmet Ali Sahin, on behalf of the government to the family of Engin Ceber, who died in prison as a consequence of abuse; joins the Human Rights Committee of the Turkish Parliament in its concern over the failure of the judiciary to prosecute cases of torture and ill-treatment, the number of which is growing; calls on the Turkish government to undertake further systematic efforts to eliminate torture and ill-treatment, inside and outside official places of detention, and to end the culture of impunity; stresses in this regard that ratification and implementation of the Optional Protocol of the UN Convention against Torture would increase considerably the credibility of these efforts; is also concerned about excessive use of police force in dealing with public demonstrations;
