Individuele kwetsbaarheid en weerstand spelen een rol bij het voorkomen en de ernst van acute stressreacties. De symptomen vertonen een karakteristiek gemengd- en wisselend beeld en omvatten een beginstadium van 'verdoving' met enige bewustzijnsvernauwing en verenging van aandacht, onvermogen prikkels te begrijpen en desoriëntatie.
