De verwijdering en vernietiging van halon uit schepen zou bijgevolg een aanzienlijke aantasting van de ozonlaag in de toekomst voorkomen en het vooruitzicht op een spoedig herstel van de ozonlaag verbeteren.
Therefore, the removal and destruction of halon from ships would avoid significant future ozone layer depletion and enhance the prospects for early recovery of the ozone layer.

Wat halonen betreft, verbiedt Verordening (EG) nr. 2037/2000 betreffende de ozonlaag afbrekende stoffen het op de markt brengen en het gebruik van stoffen die de ozonlaag afbreken, in de EU, met inbegrip van het gebruik ter bestrijding van brand aan boord van schepen.
With regard to halon, Regulation 2037/00 on "Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer" bans the marketing and use of ozone depleting substances in the EU, including their use as fire protection systems on board ships.

(2) Uit recente gegevens blijkt dat voor een toereikende bescherming van de ozonlaag de handel in stoffen die de ozonlaag afbreken sterker onder controle moet worden gehouden dan bedoeld bij het Protocol van Montreal zoals gewijzigd in 1997 en uit dezelfde gegevens blijkt dat er bijkomende maatregelen nodig zijn om de productie van stoffen die de ozonlaag afbreken en met name chloorfluorkoolwaterstoffen en nieuwe stoffen onder controle te houden.
(2) Recent evidence indicates that for the adequate protection of the ozone layer a higher degree of control of trade in ozone depleting substances is required than is provided by the Montreal Protocol, as amended in 1997. The same evidence indicates that there should be additional measures to control production of ozone-depleting substances and in particular on hydrochlorofluorcarbons and new substances.
