The Regulatory Committee on Organic Farming assists the Commission in defining policies for organic farming.

Mariann Fischer Boel verklaarde dat de Commissie reeds een mate van flexibiliteit heeft toegestaan voor producenten die aan het omschakelen zijn en dat binnen het Permanent Comité voor biologische landbouw andere mogelijkheden moeten worden bezien.

The event was part of a wide Foresight process initiated in 2006 by the EU Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) with the aim of identifying emerging and innovative solutions which would enable agriculture to cope with a range of complex and interlinked challenges, such as rapidly increasing globalisation, climate change and the unsustainable consumption of natural resources.

After informing the committee referred to in Article 16(1) or, where necessary, the committee set up by Article 14(1) of Council Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91 of 24 June 1991 on organic production of agricultural products and indications referring thereto on agricultural products and foodstuffs , the Standing Committee on Protected Geographical Indications and Protected Designations of Origin set up by Article 15(1) of Council Regulation (EC) No 510/2006 of 20 March 2006 on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs or the Standing Committee on Traditional Specialities Guaranteed set up by Article 18(1) of Council Regulation (EC) No 509/2006 of 20 March 2006 on agricultural products and foodstuffs as traditional specialities guaranteed , the Commission may decide to carry out one or more of the following measures:

In its communication to the European Parliament and the Council of 10 June 2004 concerning the European Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming, the Commission announced that it will propose an amendment to Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91 replacing the current national derogations for imports by a new permanent system making use of technical equivalency evaluations by bodies assigned by the Community for that purpose.
