Begrijpt u mij niet verkeerd, ik weet dat humanitaire steun apolitiek is en dat verleners van humanitaire steun niet in gevaar mogen worden gebracht, maar soms, met als primair doel het redden van levens, is de inzet van het leger nodig omdat alleen het leger de uitrusting en de mensen kan leveren voor een snelle hulpverlening en het opzetten van infrastructuur – dat maakt ons gereed om in te gaan op een eventueel verzoek om hulp van de VN.
Do not misunderstand: I know that humanitarian aid is apolitical and that humanitarian workers must not be put at risk but, in the primary objective of saving lives, sometimes it is only the military who have the equipment or people to achieve that – delivering aid at speed, putting in place the infrastructure – and that is why, should a UN request arrive, we will be ready to help.

Daarnaast heeft de EU haar toezegging benadrukt dat zij ook in de toekomst de noodzakelijke hulp zal blijven geven om in de primaire behoeften van de Palestijnse bevolking te voorzien. Zo heeft de EU in 2006 in totaal voor meer dan 650 miljoen EUR steun verleend. Bovendien heeft de EU ervoor gezorgd dat er ook in de Palestijnse media aandacht is besteed aan deze hulpverlening.
The EU also stressed its commitments to continuing to provide the aid needed in order to meet the basic needs of the Palestinian people, the total value of which amounted, in 2006, to in excess of EUR 650 million, and it also ensured that these efforts were made known to the Palestinian public.
