6. Points out that European research can provide new solutions to reduce CO2 emissions and increase transport efficiency, and welcomes the Commission’s strategic approach in this regard; stresses the need for a subprogramme dedicated to mobility with as its objective increasing transport efficiency e.g. by promoting smart and interoperable routing systems for all transport modes, integrating systems such as Galileo, SESAR, ERTMS etc; notes that cutting-edge technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or EGNOS/Galileo could be used in implementing ITS applications; calls for EGNOS certification, given that this is a key element in terms of use; believes furthermore that more efficient ways of commercialising research results are needed, together with further research into the integration of ever increasing volumes of renewable energy in conjunction with a more intelligent energy system in which electrified transport is a central feature of the solution;
