Patiënten geven blijk van aanhoudende somatische klachten of een voortdurende preoccupatie met hun uiterlijk. Normale of alledaagse gevoelens en verschijnselen worden door patiënten dikwijls uitgelegd als abnormaal en kwellend en de aandacht is doorgaans gericht op slechts één of twee organen of systemen van het lichaam. Patients manifest persistent somatic complaints or a persistent preoccupation with their physical appearance. Normal or commonplace sensations and appearances are often interpreted by patients as abnormal and distressing, and attention is usually focused upon only one or two organs or systems of the body.
