Emphasises the need to increase awareness of the situation of women of all age groups in the context of the EU’s policies on education, social integration, means to balance family and working life, migration and employment, poverty, health care and in its social protection policies, to protect the rights of women, to promote equality and equal employment opportunities for men and women, to ensure safe working conditions, equal access and career opportunities including the application of the same criteria for selection in matters of employment, to concentrate more on the situation of women in the decision-making process and to combat all forms of discrimination in the labour market, such as occupation segregation or wage discrimination, in particular by promoting lifelong learning, combating precarious employment and promoting work with rights, working hours that are compatible with a work-life balance, a public healthcare network and social security system, and differentiated practices for the organisation of working time, at the woman’s request;

Considers that education should be placed at the very heart of the Union's economic strategy, with the goal of raising the overall quality of all levels of education and training in the EU, combining excellence and equity and reforming the educational model; believes that education should constitute a public good in the eyes of the Union, with investment in all aspects of the education system, in quality of education and in broadening access to higher education; proposes the introduction of a permanent, inclusive European-level system of lifelong learning, under which the Erasmus and Leonardo programmes for education and training mobility would become more generally accessible; points out the need to urgently raise the level of investment in the field of RD, particularly in view of the 7FP mid-term evaluation and the next EU financial perspectives;

Points to the need for increased investment in the provision of childcare facilities and in the area of pre-school education, given that the current levels are still unsatisfactory; also calls for greater investment in education, training and lifelong learning in several Member States, objectives in respect of which a system of guaranteed public, free and quality education is of vital importance, with particular regard to information technologies, in order to address the problem of the high rates of school drop-outs and of those seeking early retirement, to improve educational and training conditions, to pave the way for women to participate in the labour market and to promote efforts to reconcile work and family life for men and women;
