Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and Directive 2002/58/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 July 2002 concerning the processing of personal data and the protection of privacy in the electronic communications sector (Directive on privacy and electronic communications) generally require that the privacy and data protection rights of individuals should be fully respected and adequate technical and organisational security measures should be implemented for that purpose.

Ondanks de pogingen en voorstellen van de Fractie Europees Unitair Links heeft het Europees Parlement, door middel van het door haar goedgekeurde compromis van Europees Rechts en de Sociaal-democratische Fractie, en ondanks enkele individuele wijzigingen, de basisfilosofie aangenomen van de neoliberale voorstellen van de Commissie.
In spite of the efforts and proposals of the European Group of the Left, the European Parliament, through the European Right/Socialist compromise which it has approved, has adopted the basic philosophy – despite certain individual changes – of the Commission’s neoliberal proposals.

- (DE) Mevrouw de Voorzitter, in verband met het verslag van mevrouw Schierhuber, waarover wij nu moeten stemmen, rijst het probleem dat de Fractie van de Europese Sociaal-Democraten en de Confederale Fractie Europees Unitair Links/Noords Groen Links over een aantal punten om een stemming in onderdelen hebben verzocht. Om een of andere technische reden zijn de diensten daarvan niet op de hoogte gebracht.

(13) Gemeenschappelijk onderzoek naar en een coherente toepassing op Europees vlak van technische maatregelen voor de bescherming van werken en ander materiaal en het verstrekken van de noodzakelijke informatie betreffende de rechten terzake, zijn van fundamenteel belang, aangezien het uiteindelijke doel van die maatregelen is uitvoering te geven aan de beginselen en garanties die vastgelegd zijn in het recht.
(13) A common search for, and consistent application at European level of, technical measures to protect works and other subject-matter and to provide the necessary information on rights are essential insofar as the ultimate aim of these measures is to give effect to the principles and guarantees laid down in law.
