En avril 2016, la Commission européenne a annoncé une contribution humanitaire initiale de 83 millions d'euros aux projets d'aide d'urgence mis sur pied pour soutenir les réfugiés en Grèce à l'agence de l'ONU pour les réfugiés (HCR), à un consortium pan-européen de sociétés de la Croix-Rouge et à six organisations non-gouvernementales européennes (l'International Rescue Committee, le Danish Refugee Council, Médecins du Monde, OXFAM, le Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund et Save the Children).
