De uitspraak betreft een verbod dat Rusland begin 2014 heeft uitgevaardigd wegens een beperkt aantal gevallen van Afrikaanse varkenspest (AVP) in EU-gebieden dicht bij de grens met Belarus.

Uit de handelscijfers blijkt hoe verstrekkend de gevolgen van het verbod zijn geweest: waar het volume van de handel met Rusland in 2013 iets meer dan 740 000 ton bedroeg, was dat in 2014 geslonken tot 65 000 – een daling met 91 %.

Wat ten slotte de implicaties van de crisis voor de internationale handel betreft, werd het invoer­verbod dat Rusland voor groenten en fruit uit de EU heeft afgekondigd en zware economische verliezen heeft veroorzaakt onder telers en handelaars, door de EU-leden afgewezen omdat het niet wetenschappelijk onderbouwd en buiten verhouding is.
