– (HU) In the speech I made on 23 March, I asked the European Parliament and the European Commission to intervene to protect the Romanian town of Verespatak (Roşia Montană) whose vulnerable population, architectural heritage and natural environment are under threat as a result of plans by a Canadian-Romanian joint venture to develop a mine.

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Dupuy (Minister of Canadian Heritage), seconded by Mr. Gerrard (Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development)), — That Bill C–53, An Act to establish the Department of Canadian Heritage and to amend and repeal certain other Acts, be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage; And of the amendment of Mrs. Tremblay (Rimouski–Témiscouata), seconded by Mrs. Gagnon (Québec), — That the motion be amended by striking out all the words after the word “That” and substituting the following: “Bill C–53, An Act to establish the Department of Canadian Heritage and to amend and repeal certain other Acts, be not now read a second time but that the Order be discharged, the Bill withdrawn and the subject-matter thereof referred to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage”.
