Ferry Services, B.C. Rail Ltd and B.C. Transportation and Financing Authority: (a) how many acres (or hectares) of farm land will be used for Roberts Bank port and rail related developments now underway or under study; (b) with the completion of the Roberts Bank port expansion, including both the third berth and second terminal, what plans, if any, are there to use the Brunswick Point farmlands; (c) is the affected Roberts Bank farmland presently protected by the B.C. Agricultural Land Reserve designation; (d) does the Tsawwassen Final Agreement address the issue of farmland protection and if so, how; (e) will the farmland continue to be protected by the Agricultural Land Reserve designation following ratification of the Tsawwassen Final Agreement and, if not, why; (f) did the Vancouver Port Authority undertake to work jointly with the Tsawwassen Band to ensure the removal of the Agricultural Land Reserve designation from the farmland and, if so, why and what alternate measures did it put in place to protect farmland adjacent to the Roberts Bank port, rail and highway expansion; (g) did the Vancouver Port Authority agree to jointly develop with the Tsawwassen Band a container handling facility on the farmland protected by the B.C. Agricultural Land Reserve designation and, if so, why did the Vancouver Port Authority enter into such an agreement rather than develop container handling facilities further inland in a less environmentally sensitive area; (h) did the Vancouver Port Authority agree that the land would be leased at lease rates ...

Bearing in mind that the economic crisis, in conjunction with the vast volume of imports of fish farming products, has affected many units which are unable to meet their financial obligations, will the Commission say whether it is envisaging a specific support scheme for this sector?

Believes that the early retirement provisions of the EU should be improved, particularly in the case of farmers who pass on their farm to younger farmers, enabling them to create economically and socially viable units, and that further schemes should be considered to improve the incentive to retire; in addition the early retirement provisions should be regularly reviewed in the light of the various rates of inflation in different Member States; believes further that older, retired farmers should be permitted a degree of involvement which utilises their experience and protects their self-respect, without jeopardising their entitlement to the provisions of the scheme;
15. estime que le régime de préretraite prévu par l'Union européenne doit être amélioré, notamment dans le cas des agriculteurs qui transmettent leur exploitation à de jeunes exploitants, afin de leur permettre de créer des entreprises économiquement et socialement viables, et qu'il convient d'envisager d'autres initiatives afin d'améliorer les mesures mises en place pour inciter les agriculteurs à prendre leur retraite; il convient par ailleurs d'adapter régulièrement les dispositions en matière de retraite anticipée en fonction de l'évolution de l'inflation dans les différents États membres; estime en outre que les agriculteurs retraités doivent être autorisés à participer dans une certaine mesure à des activités mettant en valeur leur expérience et respectant leur dignité, sans compromettre leurs droits aux mesures prévues dans le cadre du régime;

Mr Mac Sharry, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, speaking today at the academic session of the International Week of Agriculture in Brussels, said that the family farm unit remained the basis of farming in the Community and that he was particularly proud of the European Community's achievement in fostering progressive agriculture while respecting the social importance and economic significance of the family farm.
