Let me say, then, that, second only to growth and employment policy, it is social and health policy to which demographic change presents the greatest challenge of all, not only in view of the ballooning costs in that area, but also in terms of the realisation of our four freedoms, of the expanding internal market and of the public’s greater mobility.
Je me permets donc de dire qu’après la politique de croissance et d’emploi, c’est la politique sociale et de santé qui est amenée à relever le plus grand défi, compte tenu de l’évolution démographique. Ce défi repose non seulement sur la montée en flèche des coûts du secteur, mais se pose aussi en termes de réalisation de nos quatre libertés, du marché intérieur en expansion et de la mobilité accrue des citoyens.
