The economic and social importance of forestry in rural areas tends to be underestimated, as those working in forestry often are self-employed individuals or small enterprises and their activities are commonly coupled with those of other economic sectors.

However, discussion revealed that forestry work was women's main source of income and as a result, improved technology was considered by the EC Delegation that could be used by women - a pull and tackle device that would enable the task to remain in women's control.
