– (DE) Madam President, Mr Oettinger, ladies and gentlemen, the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament supports Mr Eickhout’s report because it sends out a strong message both internally and externally that we are not giving up on combating climate change.
– (DE) Madame la Présidente, Monsieur Oettinger, Mesdames et Messieurs, le groupe de l’Alliance progressiste des Socialistes et Démocrates au Parlement européen soutient le rapport de M. Eickhout, car ce rapport envoie un message fort, tant interne qu’externe, qui rappelle que nous n’abandonnons pas la lutte contre les changements climatiques.

I am pleased that the rapporteur from the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection agreed with the arguments put forward by my group, the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, criticising the European Commission’s goal of full harmonisation, which would make it impossible in reality for Member States to adopt higher standards than those provided for in the directive.
Je me réjouis que la rapporteure de la commission du marché intérieur et de la protection des consommateurs se soit rendue aux arguments avancés par mon groupe, le groupe Alliance progressiste des Socialistes et Démocrates au Parlement européen, qui a critiqué l’objectif d’une harmonisation complète mis en avant par la Commission européenne et qui, en réalité, aurait totalement empêché les États membres d’adopter des normes plus élevées que celles inscrites dans la directive.

– (EL) Mr President, Lady Ashton, we socialists and democrats believe in a European Union with a strong presence on the international stage, a Union with a common foreign policy which can speak with one voice in what is becoming a more and more complex world, a Union with a separate defence identity, which gives it independence of choice and action and a particular role in the international sphere.

As shadow rapporteur for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, I am delighted that the vote in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection has made it possible to integrate into the final report a number of ideas that we wanted to see emerge.

Recently, I was stunned to hear a member of this House call one of our colleagues on this side a pompous socialist, because that member thought the New Democratic Party was fiercely opposed to international trade.

Mr. Bill Blaikie (Winnipeg Transcona, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I met recently with representatives of the SDF of Cameroun, a sister party of the NDP in the Socialist International, and from them I learned that many abuses are currently taking place without an appropriate international response, considering that the democratic institutions now in operation in the Cameroun are a result of conditions set by the IMF. For example, only a small percentage of the eligible electorate is registered and in the last election there were blatant episodes of vote rigging, ballot tampering and the overturning of results that were not favourable to the governing party.

Bill Blaikie (Winnipeg Transcona, NPD): Monsieur le Président, j'ai rencontré récemment des représentants du SDF, le Front social démocratie du Cameroun, le parti frère du NPD dans l'Internationale socialiste, qui m'ont appris que de nombreux abus se produisent encore sans que la communauté internationale réagisse, alors que les institutions démocratiques actuellement en place au Cameroun sont le résultat de conditions fixées par le FMI. Par exemple, seul un petit pourcentage des personnes ayant le droit de voter sont inscrites et, aux dernières élections, il y a eu des cas flagrants de truquage des votes, de falsification des bulletins de vote et de renversement des résultats qui n'étaient pas favorables au parti au pouvoir.

Is the government now considering supporting the proposal endorsed by the International Democratic Union, the Liberal International and the Socialist International to create a UN based international court of human rights to bring those who have violated international human rights to justice?
