This is the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, meeting number 48, on Thursday, March 10, 2011. The orders of the day, which are televised, are pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a study of immigration application process wait times.

As the agency's work pertains to the study on immigration application processing wait times that's being undertaken by this committee, I would like to clarify where the agency fits in the immigration process.

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 17th, 18th and 19th reports of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration entitled, “Citizenship Revocation: A Question of Due Process and Respecting Charter Rights”, “Updating Canada's Citizenship Laws”, “Immigration applications from areas affected by war, civil strife, or natural disaster”.

The Commission therefore, justifiably, stresses the need to adjust European policies to ensure that they have a positive impact on human rights and democratisation, and especially as far as our committee's competences are concerned, with regard to justice and home affairs, immigration, asylum and the fight against organised crime, issues which also relate directly to the applicant countries' accession process.
C'est donc à juste titre que la Commission souligne la nécessité d'adapter les politiques européennes afin qu'elles aient un impact positif sur les droits de l'homme et la démocratisation, en particulier pour ce qui concerne les compétences de notre commission, dans les domaines de la justice et des affaires intérieures, de l'immigration et du droit d'asile ainsi que la lutte contre le crime organisé, sujets qui concernent également directement le processus d'adhésion des pays candidats.
