AC. whereas the recent economic crisis has made the difficulties of media titles worse and, with the increasing precariousness of the journalist’s role, has made the mediascape more vulnerable to economic and political pressure, as well as more fragile in itself; whereas these phenomena have had particular consequences for those journalistic genres which are more expensive or take more time to develop, such as investigative journalism, reportage, and the posting of international and European correspondents; whereas these types of journalism are essential to guarantee responsibility and accountability on the part of public and political authorities, to stop abuses of economic and institutional power, and to ensure the uncovering and prosecution of criminal activity in the social, environmental and humanitarian areas; calls on the Commission to conduct a study of the effects of the crisis and of precarious employment on the journalistic community, with a view to analysing and endeavouring to remedy the consequences for media freedom and pluralism;

The selected projects cover a wide range of subjects, including, for example, "11 September and beyond - the Challenge for journalism education" , bringing together a consortium of Canadian and European higher education journalism institutions and leading media companies to develop a transnational response, allowing for the maintenance of reliable news and information in the post 11 September era, and "International Master in Environmental Science", focusing on the development of a two-year international Masters in environmental science with concentrations on biofuel and air quality studies by a consortium of European and US higher education institutions and industry partners.

For the purposes of this Article credit institutions shall comprise all undertakings on the list published in the Official Journal of the European Communities pursuant to Article 3 (7) of Directive 77/780/EEC, as well as central banks and official domestic and international banking organizations and all private and public undertakings which are not established in the Community but which satisfy the definition in Article 1 of Directive 77/780/EEC.
