Canada is a coastal state with a continental shelf extending beyond 200 miles, and has sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring the continental shelf and exploiting the natural resources, both living, that is, sedimentary species, and non-living, such as oil and gas found on the seabed in the sub-soil.
Le Canada est un État côtier doté d'un plateau continental qui s'étend au-delà de 200 milles et il dispose de droits souverains aux fins d'exploration du plateau continental et d'exploitation des ressources naturelles, tant biologiques, s'agissant des espèces sédentaires, que non biologiques, comme le pétrole et le gaz présents dans le sous-sol des fonds marins.
