In its answer to my question E-5029/08 , the Commission states that it 'has not received any complaints so far regarding the adjudication of public service contracts for maritime transport to the Greek islands'. I should like to draw the Commission's attention to the fact that numerous articles in the Greek press refer to (a) complaints from the President of the Union of Greek Coastal Shipowners concerning lack of transparency in tendering procedures, (b) a complaint from a shipowner concerning blackmail and bribery surrounding State aid for non-profitable ferry services, (c) a ruling by the Hellenic Competition Commission against the company 'Sea Star', which controls ANEK, a company receiving State aid, and (d) an increase in State aid - 100 million euro this year and a further 200 million over the last five years - allocated directly without any transparency.

Following once more the familiar tactic of criminalising social struggles (farmers and students have already been prosecuted), the Greek Government has not hesitated to use the Greek judicial system to protect the immunity of shipowners' capital and to intimidate and muzzle any social and trade union demands made by workers.
Recourant une fois encore à la tactique bien connue de la criminalisation des luttes sociales (poursuites engagées contre des agriculteurs et des étudiants), le gouvernement grec n'hésite pas à se servir des tribunaux pour protéger l'intangibilité des capitaux des armateurs, étouffer les revendications syndicales et effrayer les travailleurs.
