It assists the Commission in exercising of its implementing powers in certain statistical domains. These exclude agricultural and fishery statistics where the Commission is assisted by the Standing Committee for Agricultural Statistics (SCAS).

The new Advisory Group replaces five existing consultative bodies – the Advisory Committee on Foodstuffs, plus the standing groups on veterinary matters, plant health, animal welfare and feedingstuffs previously attached to the Advisory Committee on Agricultural Product Health and Safety.

With a view to involving economic and social decision-makers throughout the Community more closely in the fixing of statistical objectives, the Council of the European Communities has decided to set up the European Advisory Committee on statistical information in the economic and social spheres (CEIES).
