Honourable senators, it is clear that at least the Roman Catholic bishops of Newfoundland and Labrador and, nationally, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, are telling Parliament, first, that in no way do they cede the right or entitlement which they presently have as protected by the Constitution and, second, that even if the power of Parliament is to be exercised and constitutional protection is to be ripped away from them, they are asking us to look at the words contained in clause 17(2).
Honorables sénateurs, il est clair qu'au moins les évêques catholiques de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador et, au niveau national, la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada disent au Parlement que, tout d'abord, ils ne sont absolument pas disposés à abandonner le droit qu'ils détiennent à l'heure actuelle et qui est protégé par la Constitution et, ensuite, que même si le Parlement doit utiliser son pouvoir pour leur retirer cette protection constitutionnelle, ils nous demandent d'examiner le libellé du paragraphe 17(2).
