I recently had a long and interesting conversation in Scotland with the Consul General for India and we were reflecting upon the problems in trying to constitute a polity which is continental in scale and multilingual in character, with citizens of many faiths and of none, with memories of historical antagonism between religious communities and which tries to sustain a working democratic constitution and to live at peace with its neighbours.
Il y a peu, j’ai eu en Écosse une longue et intéressante conversation avec le Consul général d’Inde et nous avons réfléchi sur les problèmes qu’engendre la tentative de constituer un État à l’échelle d’un continent et au caractère multilingue, avec des citoyens ayant de nombreuses croyances ou n’en n’ayant aucune, avec les souvenirs d’un antagonisme historique entre les communautés religieuses, une régime qui essaye de maintenir en vie une constitution démocratique qui fonctionne et de vivre en paix avec ses voisins.
